Overview
Sangue e Arena brought gladiatorial combat, mythological scenes and a naval battle to the Colosseum through a studio-wide combination of live action and CGI. As an early-career artist on a major international production, I contributed defined sequences while learning how specialized work is coordinated inside a much larger visual system.
My Contribution
- Rotoscoped and composited filmed gladiators for their integration into the projected scenes.
- Animated stone statues and developed wireframe construction sequences for the architecture.
- Created the complete 3D Naumachia scene, including characters, hand-animated walk cycles and particle work.
- Integrated assigned scenes within the wider projection mapping workflow and shared art direction.
This was my first large-scale international projection mapping production. I was responsible for the full 3D production of the Naumachia sequence, while compositing for that sequence was handled separately by others on the team.
Pipeline
- Live-action preparation and compositing
- Character and statue animation
- Naumachia scene production
- Particle and architectural effects
- Cross-department review
- Projection integration
Technical Challenges
- Challenge — filmed performers, character animation, particles and architectural imagery had to read as parts of one production despite coming from different disciplines.
- Production response — responsibilities were divided across the team, with each sequence reviewed against the shared visual direction and the geometry of the monument.
- Production impact — the process established practical experience in handoffs, compositing and large-scale animation within an international collaborative production.
Design Intent
Each contribution had to support the historical narrative and remain consistent with material produced by other departments. The work was shaped as part of a shared architectural projection, not as a collection of isolated effects.
Project Impact
The project became a formative lesson in how individual craft, clear boundaries of responsibility and close collaboration support a production larger than any single sequence.
