Overview

Created for Lumifest Longueuil 2023 and projected on the outside wall of St. Mark's Church, this work pays tribute to water and its presence in living bodies and ecosystems. I developed it as a personal piece, shaping fluid movements around the façade. It followed its own rhythm, independently of the programmed music, while being conceived to fit the atmosphere of the evening.

My Contribution
  • Conceived and produced the piece independently, from the first images to the pixel map delivered for projection.
  • Developed the fluidity and distinctive movements of the water through simulation and animation.
  • Composed the mapping around those movements, working with the church’s gothic openings and reliefs.
  • Created a visual rhythm independent of the programmed music, while keeping the mood of the evening in mind.
Pipeline
  • Concept and references
  • Fluid simulation
  • Fluidity and movement studies
  • Animation and architectural mapping
  • Compositing
  • Pixel map preparation for the façade
Technical Challenges
  • Challenge — preserve the continuity and fluidity of the movement across a façade interrupted by gothic arches, stone reliefs and dark openings.
  • Production response — I shaped the mapping around the water’s movements and the features of the architecture, working on how the image flowed across the surface.
  • Result — the façade became part of the movement in a work that followed its own rhythm alongside the music programme.
Design Intent

The piece explores water through its fluidity and distinctive movements. I wanted those movements to interact with the architecture and offer a contemplative presence beside the music stage. The work was conceived to fit the mood of the programming, without being synchronized to the tracks being played.

Project Impact

Presented at Lumifest Longueuil 2023 on the wall of St. Mark’s Church, the piece expressed my own artistic approach — as Dominique Arcand put it, “a work signed Killian Pichon.”
